Global Gateway-“Cold Shoulder” Project
Project Duration and Feedback
The project was going on in the Public School N51 in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi last school year. Seventh Graders /21 students/ were involved in the project. We sent the list of students and they were registered on Rafi.Ki on May 13, 2008. One of the program managers Chris Waughen helped us to make contacts with Laicester School in England; we received a letter from Anne Steventon about the joint project COLD SHOULDERS. It is the project on social exclusion and ostracism. We had been registered on buddy list and got letters from about 30 other schools all over the world.
Curriculum area: History, Religion, Art, English, Citizenship, Georgian. Sessions which were made by us, teachers, encouraged students to think about some people around them who are ignored in society because of poverty, or mental or physical disabilities or by many other reasons. Students read materials about Joseph Merric-the Elephant Man and Father Domein. For summer students were given the task-a) to make small research about the problem, b) to find out materials and read about the problem, c) to make interviews on “Street Children”, d) to do a small bit of research about their own society in forms of poems, songs, symbols, pictures, paintings which reflect their feelings, emotions of the people who are left by others. We sent paintings to Moat Community College for Christmas. Students made posters and composed more than 50 mottoes.
We consider that for this age group the project was very fruitful. 1) Students learned how to work on projects and present their job in English 2) Students learned to make small researches in English 3) Students became friendlier and more tolerant. 4) Students made many foreign friends and are continuing to write each other. 5) We are going to participate in other project on Rafi.Ki from September.
